Alvelyn Sanders-Swafford is an ordained minister, writer, and filmmaker. She is the author of the book, Lord, Have Mercy- 5 Go-To Prayers When You Need To Pray, But Don’t Know What To Say. She served as a pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church denomination for ten years. She is the writer, producer, and director of the independent, award-winning documentary, “Foot Soldiers: Class of 1964.” As a writer and journalist, her work has appeared in Essence magazine and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper among other publications. For many years, she served as a reporter for Atlanta’s NPR (National Public Radio) station, WABE 90.1FM. She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University, and graduate degrees from Clark Atlanta University and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and married to Reverend Raymond Swafford, a nuclear energy expert and a Presiding Elder in the AME Church. She is the daughter of Dr. Georgianne Thomas, a noted university professor, an award-winning filmmaker, and a veteran foot solider of the Atlanta Student Movement/Civil Rights Movement. Her father, the late Alvin Sanders, was inducted into the Clark Atlanta University Athletics Hall of Fame, and he was a trailblazer in the field of computer science. Alvelyn Sanders-Swafford is a native of Atlanta, Georgia.
